April Meeting

It’s hard to believe the school year is almost over and we have only two more meetings.

At this Thursday’s meeting, we will be reviewing nominations for open 2017/18 board positions and approving our amended budget. All members are always welcome to attend the meetings, but this is a meeting where you would exercise your right to vote on the amended budget.

Also, our upcoming May meeting will include a Family Fun night (details to be published soon) where we will first have a 15 minute meeting to vote in our new board members, do a few awards, and finalize a few housekeeping items. Stay tuned for more information.

On a separate note, thanks to everyone that purchased flowers or helped their student with selling flowers. We’re still tallying the final numbers, but this will be our best fundraiser of the year! And a HUGE thanks to Jennifer Strong and Kristen Cruz for organizing this successful event to support the school!

And finally, thank you to all of those that signed up to help with COSI on 4/28. We were able to hit our goal number of volunteers yesterday! I know the kiddos are already super excited about spending the day learning with you and COSI.

THANKS!

– KaRene

Open PTA Roles 2017/18 School Year

Hello, everyone.

I can’t believe we only have 2.5 months left in this school year and it’s already time to plan for next year.  We have a few open positions for which we’re looking for leaders.  There is no experience required beyond having a student at Crosby next year.  It’s a great way to meet other parents and support our special school and teachers. If you have any interest or questions regarding the roles below, please let me or another board member know.

As you see below, one of these positions is my current role as President.  After sincere reflection, I’ve decided that I am not able to commit the time necessary for another term. I have enjoyed working with you all and I’m hopeful to still be involved next year to help the new TBD President, lead a committee or help in other ways.

P T A    B O A R D

President (currently KaRene Smith)
Duties: Leads the overall business of the PTA.  This includes working with other Board members to set priorities for the year and the budget.  The President runs the meetings, works with committee leads to ensure they have what they need for events/programs, and works with the treasurer to mange the finances and compliance.

Recording Secretary (currently Laura Hemple who is moving on to JHS)
Duties: Attends all board meetings.  Take and publish notes of meetings Be the keeper of the agenda and meeting notes files.

F U N   &    F U N D R A I S I N G

AR Cart (currently Debi Connelly who is moving on to JHS)
Duties: As students reach their AR goals, they can use their points to shop in the “prize room” (Art room) approximately 3 to 4 times per year.  The leader (or co-leaders if desired) purchases the prizes, sets up the prize room and runs the room that day.
Skate Night (currently Tracy Sterwerf))
Duties: Coordinate the 3-4 dates with The Skating Place, ensure that the paper flyer goes home with students two weeks prior to the event.
Entertainment Book (currently Laura Hemple who is moving on to JHS)
*If the PTA Board approves this fundraiser next year at the summer budget meeting*

Duties: The leader (or co-leaders) work with the Entertainment Book company to confirm date and kick off of program, ensure students get order forms/sample book, collect and turn in all monies, distribute books and prizes to students. This involves a 4 week commitment in the fall.  We need one overall lead and then would be good to have 2 more people to help.

We’ll be discussing these positions at our upcoming PTA Board meeting on Tuesday, March 14th.

Thank you,

KaRene Smith

Upcoming Events – Feb/March

We hope everyone’s week is off to a great start.  There are few things going on over the next weeks and we wanted to make sure everyone is in the know.

DONUTS WITH DADS/GRANDDADS: Tomorrow and Thursday are Donuts with Dad/Grandad! If you RSVP-ed, guests can arrive anytime between 7:15 and 8:15. The event will end at 8:30. We’ll be serving glazed donuts (peanut-safe), OJ, coffee and milk. Please tell all guests to park in the BACK and come directly in the cafeteria doors. Do NOT park in the front as buses will be unloading students.

BOX TOPS: Lollipops for Box Tops ends this Friday.  Turn in a sheet to get a lollipop.  The school earns ten cents for each box top, which adds up quick!

SKATE NIGHT 2/23: Thursday is Skate Night at The Skating Place. If your kids haven’t been to one, it’s a great time and very good at burning off that endless kid energy.

CHIPOLTE NIGHT 2/28: Next Tuesday is our Chipolte fundraiser.  Come to Chipolte in Harrison from 5:00 PM to 9:00 PM and Crosby will get 50% of what you spend!  You just need to mention the event or bring the flier sent home. Tell neighbors, grandparents, etc.!

STUDENT DANCE 3/3: Fliers should be home by now.  Admission of the listed school supplies should be brought to the door that night for admission.  Please get signups back ASAP as space is limited to the first 100 kids because of the gym capacity.  If there is a significantly higher demand than can be accommodated, we will explore doing another dance in April for those that didn’t get to attend this one.

MUFFINS WITH MOM/GRANDMA: This will be on 3/8 (A-L) and 3/9 (M-Z). Stay tuned for a flier coming home soon. We will be looking for donations of muffins.  And if you’re a dad who is interested in helping out on serving the moms or baking, please let us know.

NEW! SPRING FLOWERS: A spring flower sale will be kicking off in a few weeks.  More details will be available soon, but please hold off on those planning those plantings until you can check out what will be offered.  Flowers would arrive late April/early May.

Lastly, we’ll have some open roles for the 2017/18 school year on the PTA Boards/Committees – more details soon.  If you have any interest in helping out in any fashion, please let us know.  We always can use volunteers.

Thanks and let us know if you have any questions!

Skyline Time!

It’s SKYLINE time! Crosby PTA is working with Harrison Skyline for a fundraiser night on Tuesday, 1/31 from 5pm-9pm. A flier will be coming home soon with students (and we’ll post here). Present the flier and Crosby will get 10% of your order. A great night to help fund activities at Crosby and hang out with other Crosby families. Questions – email us.

Upcoming Volunteer Opportunities

I can’t believe we’re almost at winter break and the new year will be here before we know it!  With that in mind, I wanted to reach out to everyone now for helping with a few upcoming events/programs.

Can you volunteer to help with any of the following?  All of these activities will help to support enrichment, pay for field trips, teachers supplies and more, but we can’t get them done without help from our amazing parents.

Dance Night: Just as we have done in years past, we’ll be be having a dance party night for students in February. Volunteers will be needed to get the word out and help the night of the event.

COSI on Wheels:
On 4/28, COSI will be at Crosby for an interactive full-day program on “The Human Machine.”  We will need volunteers to setup for ~1 hour the day before (4/27) and 12-15 volunteers to help all day on the day of the event.  This was super fun for volunteers last year – the kids have a great time learning and interacting with the different science stations that each volunteer will be running.  This can be open to grandparents, too.

Restaurant Fundraiser:  Tag-teaming with Jamie Wassler to set up 4 (1 per month) fundraisers at different restaurants (dates and restaurants TBD).  This is simple and merely involves working out logistics with the restaurant and should take no more than a few phone calls.  This is a good opportunity for a working parent that wants to help “after hours.”

Spring Flower Fundraiser: We’ll be doing a spring flower sale this year.  We’re looking for 2 people to tag team running this.  It should be fairly easy as the florist/nursery will do most of the work.  Our volunteers would take orders (via flyer) and coordinate with the vendor for ordering and delivery to the school.

Family Portrait Fundraiser: Another Spring fundraiser will be doing is one or two weekend days where we offer affordable family portrait mini photography packages (~$25 for a disc of photos).  We’re looking to recruit professional or amateur photographers to help as well as volunteers to coordinate signing families and up helping the day of the event (date TBD).

If you have any questions about the above, please let me know. I hope everyone has a very Merry Christmas and happy new year!

Thanks,

KaRene Smith
